Zero Waste for Beginners: 7 Mistakes to Avoid

Going zero waste is exciting. But somewhere between good intentions and deep-rooted habits, a few mistakes crop up again and again. Nothing serious: once you know what they are, they're easy to avoid, and it's much easier to stay motivated in the long run.

1. Replacing everything at once

This is the most common mistake: throwing out half-full bottles and buying a whole new bathroom's worth of bamboo and stainless steel. The result is more waste and a budget that spirals. The better habit is to finish each product, then replace it with a durable alternative only once it's empty.

2. Buying things you won't use

A beautiful water bottle that sits in the cupboard doesn't save a single plastic bottle. Before you buy, ask yourself a simple question: will I use this every week? Three items you use every day beat ten bought on a whim.

3. Leaving your produce bags at home

Who hasn't turned up at the market empty-handed? To make produce bags second nature:

  • Put them straight back in your shopping bag once they're washed.
  • Keep one or two in the car or in your handbag.
  • Note their empty weight, or choose bags with the weight already printed on them, to make weighing at the till easier.

4. Neglecting your water bottle

A stainless steel bottle can last for years, as long as you look after it. Rinse it every evening, leave it to dry with the lid off and give it a regular wash in hot soapy water with a bottle brush. Avoid the dishwasher, which damages the outer finish, and the freezer, as freezing water can warp the double wall. If a smell builds up, a little bicarbonate of soda and hot water left overnight usually does the trick.

5. Forgetting about drying

Bamboo toothbrushes, soap bars, konjac sponges and reusable pads all need to dry out between uses. Constant moisture shortens their life. A few simple habits help:

  • Store your toothbrush head up in a well-ventilated cup.
  • Rest your soap on a slatted soap dish, away from the shower spray.
  • Hang up your konjac sponge after gently squeezing it out.
  • Let reusable pads air-dry before they go in the laundry basket.

6. Using beeswax wraps like cling film

Beeswax wraps are perfect for a sandwich, half an avocado or a bowl of leftovers. But they don't like heat or hot water: no microwave, no dishwasher, and no food that's still warm. Keep them away from raw meat and fish too, since the wraps can't be cleaned properly without hot water. Wash them in cold water with a little mild soap and, with good care, they'll stay with you for around a year.

7. Aiming for perfection

Absolute zero waste doesn't exist, and that's fine. A forgotten wrapper, a purchase that didn't work out, a last-minute picnic: each of these moments is part of the journey. What counts is the overall direction. Set yourself realistic goals, such as one new habit a month, and give yourself credit for the ones you've already adopted.

The right mindset

Zero waste isn't a list of rules, but a series of small, more sustainable choices. Start with what genuinely makes your life easier, like a water bottle that goes everywhere with you or produce bags that always live in the same place. Once those first habits are in place, the rest will follow naturally, almost without effort.
